If you like hiking and if walking up to an active volcano is on your bucket list, this experience is for you. One of the things that makes Costa Rica so interesting is the number of microclimates you can find in such a small country. This hike starts at an altitude of approximately 2600 meters above sea level, which makes the surrounding flora and fauna already quite different from what you might have seen in our country; but as you hike up to an altitude of 3340 meters above sea level the ecosystem is so different that it looks like a different country up there. With some luck, and if you’re paying attention as you hike you might spot the magnificent quetzal.
The route is approximately 5 km, the first part of the hike could take you around 2 hours. You’ll get to the viewpoint where, if weather allows, you’ll find amazing views of the crater, surrounding areas and the Turrialba Valley. Because we’re in an active volcano, you’ll have about 20 minutes up there to enjoy the view and catch your breath before is time to hike back down.
Every day, based on availability: the National Park entrance is enabled from 5:00am to 10:00am in one-hour blocks, prior reservation is required. We’ll try to book your ticket according to your preferences, but its subject to availability.
Please consider that it takes us 1.5 hours to drive from Turrialba to the trail head.
Also, the whole visit is subject to the volcanic activity and safety regulations of the National Park. In such force majeure conditions, we’ll do our best to substitute, modify or change the experience for you to have a great time but always prioritizing your safety. Please check our Payment and cancellation policies for one day tours for more details.
