From coffee plantation to wildlife refuge
From 1870 to 1930 these terrains were dedicated to the production of coffee, sugar, cacao and banana. Luckily, times are a-changing and since 1991 it's a biological reserve devoted to conservation, research and education.
The Refuge has more than 15 kilometers of marked natural trails, some lead to natural river pools, waterfalls and forests. These trails range from low intensity to high level, with routes of half an hour or up to 8 hours or more, depending on what the visitor is looking for.

Ride through the he plantations and botanical gardens of CATIE with a naturalist guide
This biking experience will take you through the grounds of the Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center (CATIE). Your naturalist guide will explain the great diversity of forest and fruit plantations found in there, which includes: coffee, cocoa, sugar cane, citrus, plantain, bananas, macadamia, pineapple, mangosteen, mango, avocado, and many other exotic species from tropical countries all over the world.

Know thy plants
Walk through the plantations and botanical garden of the Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center (CATIE) with a nature guide who will help you get familiar with the extensive plantations, where do these plants come from and their uses. You’ll also learn about the mission and significant contributions CATIE has made towards the research and education of tropical agriculture worldwide.
The main plantations are: coffee, cocoa, peach-palm, a huge variety tropical fruits and also of forest species, some of which can only be found in CATIE.
An authentic rural experience!
On this visit you will learn about the entire process of producing sustainable cheese; from the breeds of cows for milk, feeding, milking cows, how to process the milk and of course, sampling this delicious cheese.
Finca La Florita is located in Santa Cruz, Turrialba; its a very unique farming town in the high lands of one of the most important volcanic ranges of Costa Rica.

Guayabo National Monument
Veiled in the shadow of the Turrialba Volcano, like a mythical “lost city” from a storybook, lies a mysterious ancient city that was once home to over 10,000 people but seems to have mysteriously vanished just before the arrival of the Spaniards in the 16th century. This region, known as Guayabo National Monument, is Costa Rica’s most important archaeological site; reason for which it’s declared a National Monument. Also, its impressive aqueduct earned it the title of World Heritage of Civil Engineering.
